Cruise canceled after Coast Guard detains ship in Miami, officials say
MSC Cruises canceled the voyage of its MSC Poesia cruise ship after it was detained by the Coast Guard at the Port of Miami, the cruise line confirmed to CBS News on Tuesday.
A source familiar with the matter told CBS News more than 2,000 people were on board the ship.
MSC Cruises said the cancellation happened because of a "regulatory matter" that arose before departure. The cruise line said it was unable to resolve the issue in time to set sail.
"We have made the difficult decision to cancel the current sailing," MSC Cruises said in a statement. "We recognize how disappointing and frustrating this news is for our guests, and we sincerely apologize for the disruption to their holiday."
Guests will receive a full refund of their cruise fare, MSC Cruises said. The cruise line also said it was helping people get back home.
Before Tuesday's cancellation, the Coast Guard said in a statement to CBS News on Monday its teams "are verifying the cruise ship's compliance with international standards and U.S. regulations."
The Coast Guard's Miami sector detained the ship for inspection on Sunday.
"The Coast Guard is tasked with verifying safe and secure commerce. It is the Captain of the Port's priority to ensure the safety of passengers, crew, the vessel, and the environment," the Coast Guard said.
In an earlier statement, MSC Cruises said the company was fully cooperating with authorities.
MSC Cruises says the MSC Poesia has a capacity of more than 3,200 passengers and over 1,000 crew members.
